Positioning carbon pricing at the heart of politics

Zero Carbon campaign

Seahorse have been an invaluable part of the Zero Carbon team from the outset, and their support has been integral to the progression of the campaign. They have worked tirelessly to secure high-level engagement with policy development across Government, Business and Civil Society stakeholders, and are constantly going above and beyond to general new leads and create opportunities for the campaign. Their passion, expansive network and range of expertise is a true asset, and we are delighted to have been able to partner with them.

Context

Despite all the work being done on net zero, there is still no meaningful way of ensuring polluters pay for their emissions - and fossil fuels continue to be heavily subsidised. The Zero Carbon Campaign was established to find a way to make carbon pricing fair and effective.

Our activity

Seahorse worked with the Zero Carbon Campaign from its inception, identifying and recruiting the members of the Zero Carbon Commission, and running evidence sessions to inform the commission’s development of a white paper that set out the campaign’s policy asks. This involved engaging with MPs, Treasury and DESNZ advisers, civil servants, including the COP26 and G7 teams, business and civil society.

Our impact

Seahorse and the Zero Carbon Campaign successfully repositioned carbon pricing from the fringes of the climate debate to the heart of net zero discussions.

The campaign’s asks gained support from over 150 organisations and individuals spanning political divides and sectors (including Greenpeace, Tesco and Stephen Fry), as well as securing widespread media coverage in the Guardian, The Times, Reuters, Bloomberg, The Telegraph and Channel 4, and live interviews on BBC news.

Seahorse secured 100,000 signatures calling for the extension of carbon pricing and a Westminster Hall debate on this topic. The campaign’s key asks were also included in the Government’s Net Zero Strategy and Net Zero Review.
