Seizing the opportunity to cement the UK as an alternative protein leader

Good Food Institute

During our time working together, Seahorse provided a significant boost to our policy efforts by connecting us with high priority contacts and bringing political nous, as well as a sharp strategic lens to our work. They fitted seamlessly into our team's rhythm and working style and were always available for advice and support in what was a quickly evolving campaign.

Context

To meet the UK’s climate targets, the National Food Strategy recommended a 30% reduction in meat consumption over the next decade. One way of achieving this is through the substitution of meat with artificial protein. As a nascent industry, it needs incentives and support to grow, but it could position the UK as a leader in this field.

Our activity

Seahorse supported the Good Food Institute (GFI) Europe by raising the profile of the alternative protein sector in the UK and pushing for Government funding for research and development.

Seahorse helped to finalise and refine the GFI strategy and aims to respond to the Government’s current focus of levelling up and economic growth. Seahorse produced briefings and supported meetings with key civil servants, MPs and Ministers, including getting signatories to send a joint letter to BEIS Secretary of State highlighting the economic benefits the UK could enjoy if it positions itself as a global leader in the alternative protein industry.

Our impact

The work helped clarify the GFI’s aims and led to an increased political awareness of the benefits of investing in the alternative protein sector.
